aptosid is a desktop-oriented operating system based on the "unstable" branch of Debian, which uses the codename Sid. The distribution consists of a Live CD (bootable CD-ROM) that can be installed to a hard drive/SSD through a graphical installer. aptosid is maintained by a team of developers including former Kanotix developer Stefan Lippers-Hollmann (slh).

Installing from aptosid

Download the latest version (pick the Xfce version) and burn the ISO. aptosid includes a nice, easy to use, graphic user interface (GUI) to help with the installation. After the installation your system will reboot, booting in the locally installed aptosid.

One of the first things you will after you finishing installing is read the aptosid Manual.

Installing LXDE

Since aptosid uses the Debian sid repositories, install (as root) is performed by

# apt-get update && apt-get install lxde

In KDM, GDM or Slim choose LXDE as session to start LXDE. Use su to login as root.

You might want to remove Xfce from the system to save space:

# apt-get remove --purge libxfce4util-common

Updating your system

# apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

to update your system.

You can also use synaptic:

# apt-get install synaptic

And then, launch synaptic:

# synaptic
