It is suggested to use NetworkManager and nm-applet (which are now working very well).

LXNM is the standard network connection helper daemon of LXDE. It sets up wireless connections extremely fast. Currently, it works with Linux only.

It is no longer under development, and LXDE packages for many or all distros mostly use NetworkManager.

It could also make sense to switch to Intel's Connection Manager: http://v1.moblin.org/projects/projects_connman.php in cases where LXNM isn't sufficient.
